Title: Reading on Paper and on Screen of Teenagers: A Pilot Study of Two Schools in Colombo District, Sri Lanka
Authors: Ratnayake, R.M.S.N.
Abstract: With the development of computers, mobile phones
and other digital devices with the internet, reading on screen
has become an everyday activity as well as reading on paper. It
is understandable that the task of reading has become more
complicated with reading on screen. Therefore, the society is
concerned about Reading on Paper and on Screen, especially
of children and teenagers. The aim of the study is to gain an
understanding of the nature of reading habits of teenagers in
Colombo District, Sri Lanka. Main objectives of the study are
to investigate the nature and extent of reading habits of
teenagers, to find out the medium that the teenagers prefer
when reading and to find out the attitudes of teenagers
towards reading paper and screen. Both groups use e-media as
well as read books. Though the majority prefer Paper as the
medium of reading, they use the Screen medium too. Since the
teenagers are much used to screen, we can use it to improve
reading.

IMPORTANCE OF SHARING RESOURCES IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES: AN ANALYSIS OF RECENT RESEARCH STUDIES

Title: IMPORTANCE OF SHARING RESOURCES IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES: AN ANALYSIS OF RECENT RESEARCH STUDIES
Authors: Ratnayake, R.M.S.N.
Abstract: The goal of resource sharing in academic libraries is to maximize the availability of materials and
services at the minimum cost. In this article, the researcher has considered the research done after
2000 to analyze. Some of the common areas of resource sharing in academic libraries that the
researchers have identified are inter-library loan, exchange of publications, cooperative acquisition,
cataloguing and classification, sharing of bibliographical data, preparation and maintenance of
union catalogue and union list of serials, networking, exchange of library expertise and personnel
etc. Later on, building up consortia made it convenient for academic libraries to share their
resources.
Even though there are barriers to resource sharing such as technology/infrastructure barriers,
financial challenges, manpower limitations and legal, political and administrative barriers, the
researchers have emphasized the importance of resource sharing among academic libraries.

Identifying the Special Requirements of Teen Library Users: An Analysis of Current Research Studies

Title: Identifying the Special Requirements of Teen Library Users: An Analysis of Current Research Studies
Authors: Ratnayake, R.M.S.N.
Abstract: Though the researchers and librarians paid attention
to children and adults, they have not recognized adolescents as
a special category as library users till recent times. The
researchers have emphasized that teen library users have
special requirements in addition to conventional ones. Basically,
they expect the libraries to act as an Information Gateway as
well as acting as a provider of information and information
access from the internet and database access to book circulation
and reference services etc. They expect the library to act as a
Social Interaction or Entertainment Space with a special area
assigned to them to meet with each other and do group activities.
Since the teens are expected to be prepared for future
employment, the libraries should act as a Beneficial Physical
Environment by providing information and training for jobs
and skills development. To fulfil these requirements, the
researchers suggest a collaboration between school and public
libraries, since both cater for the same group of clients.
